I am an active search engine evaluator with Appen (formerly Leapforce) and hence I have the expertise and authority to discuss about it. I have been with them since June 2016, it’s been over 3 years now.

Below is the list and complete overview of the only 4 companies that hires Search Engine Evaluators also known as web search evaluators.

1) Appen Connect/ Leapforce

Appen is a publicly traded Australian company based in Chatswood, Australia.

The parent company Appen acquired Leapforce in late 2017 and we got an email about the acquisition from the CEO of Leapforce, Darren Jackson.

Leapforce continued as Leapforce until early 2019. It is rebranded as Appen Connect now.

The good thing about it is that they have brought in a lot of work from Appen and moved it to Leapforce. They have also moved their agents from Appen to Leapforce.

So, the present Appen Connect, formerly Leapforce hires for projects such as –

  • Search Engine Evaluation/Internet Analyst
  • Social Media Evaluation
  • Translation
  • Projects from Microsoft
  • Surveys
  • E-commerce testing
  • Transcription/Translation

Of all the projects, the only project that you wanna be on is Search Engine Evaluation Project as it is a long term project and you can work for as many years as you want as long as you maintain requisite quality.

Appen Search Engine Evaluator Salary/Hourly pay

They pay more than the minimum wage. They definitely pay more than Mcdonalds. Here is the hourly rate breakdown for you –

US & Americas    –  $13.5

UK & some Europeans   – $14/hr

Asians  –   $7

Indians – $3.

Some projects pays as high as $21/hr

Appen Payment method

Leapforce used to pay us via western union before. But after rebranding it to Appen, they changed the payment method.

Their preferred method of payment is Payoneer now.

I personally like Payoneer as they are superfast, has an okay transaction charges and an okay currency exchange rates.

They pay us within NET 15 days term. Meaning, we get paid by the 15th of next month, for the work that we do this month. Most of the time, we get paid by 12th.

So before signing up to work for Appen, create an account with Payoneer HERE and get $25* bonus as soon as you are paid $1000 to your Payoneer account.

Where to sign up for Appen

You can sign up right below with your active gmail –

Appen Sign Up

If you sign up NOW (i.e. after April 2019), you are eligible for an extra $250 bonus.

The bonus will be paid if –

  • You are selected for the SEARCH ENGINE EVALUATOR job
  • You work for a minimum of 20 hours in your first two weeks, you get $100.
  • Another 20 hours in the next 2 weeks will bring you another $150

This is how Appen Sign up page will look like –

Appen Sign Up

In the next page, you will need to select your primary language, dialect and in the page after that, you will fill in all your details and also upload your CV.

Qualification Process

Depending on the type of project, there will be different types of qualification process.

For search engine evaluator job, the qualification test consists of three parts –

  • Theoretical Part
  • Practical I ( Has to be taken in desktop/laptop/chromebook
  • Practical II (Has to be taken in a desktop/laptop/chromebook and a mobile device
  • In order to go to the next part, one needs to pass the preceding exam. And exams are tough, not everyone gets through it. Here is an in-depth guide on Leapforce exam –

  SEARCH ENGINE EVALUATOR EXAM

Thoughts –  I have been working with Appen (formerly Leapforce) since June, 2016 and my experience with them so far, has been splendid. Their support is great, response time is low. We feel as if we are valued there. There has been no problems when it comes to payment and invoicing, which is fantastic.

The only downside being that, they have reduced the payment for new evaluators. We are still paid the same rate though.

The upside being that they have brought in more projects.

Note – Appen Connect don’t hire search engine evaluator from America. For that the former company Leapforce, created a new sister company called Raterlabs.

More on that later on. Read on.

Appen Highlights

One can work in multiple projects at the same time, they also got an awesome referral bonus.

Check out Appen HERE

2) Lionbridge

This is another well-known  company that specializes in providing translation and localization services. They also hire Search Engine Evaluators and Social Media Evaluators but they call them by different names.

They call Search Engine Evaluators as Web Content Assessor, Personalized Internet Assessor, Internet Analyst, Raters and they called Social Media Evaluator as Social Media Assessor. The terminology of course doesn’t matter. The work is the same in each company that would be discussed here.

Lionbridge is based in Ballina, Ireland and has corporate office in Waltham, Massachusetts, USA. It employs independent contractors all the year round. At the time of this writing, there were job opportunities for USA, France, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Japan.

You may want to check out the latest job postings here –

Lionbridge Job Opportunities

This is how the Lionbridge sign up page should look like. Select the continent your country is in, then scroll down to select your country and the jobs available.

Lionbridge Pay Rate

Lionbridge pays around $13 – $14 per hour.

For Asians and Africans, the pay rate is of course less. A friend of mine (Indian) works in Lionbridge and he is paid $6.81/hr for English language rating.

And I came to know from trusted sources that for Hindi language rating, they pay almost $8/hr.

Lionbridge Payment method

They pay through direct deposit for their American contractors but I don’t know how they pay to Asians or Europeans. But one shouldn’t really worry about payment when one is working for reputed companies like Lionbridge or Leapforce. Because they will always pay you on time, no matter what. For Indians, they pay through Direct Deposit unlike Leapforce who pays through Payoneer.

Qualification Exam

The qualification exam for the same projects for Lionbridge and Leapforce is same. It is because they have the same client, namely Google.

Read this in-depth guide on search engine evaluation exam HERE

Important Side Note

Since their client is the same, one cannot work for both Appen and Lionbridge at the same time.

Thoughts

Lionbridge is a legit company and is as well-known as Leapforce. The only problem with them as that they don’t respond as quick as Leapforce when it comes to queries from potential applicants. And they don’t hire as much as Leapforce does. But they are not as strict as Leapforce when it comes to quality checks. Also their hour ( for Indians) is limited to 20 hours per week, they do get bonus hours sometimes though.

Lionbridge Highlights

Got multiple positions, but one can only work at one position at a time.

3) iSoftstone

This is a Fortune 100 company with over 18,000 in-house employees and it specializes in various fields of operations such as data analytics, mobility, digital experience, financial services and banking, QA & testing, crowd-sourching, etc.

It’s headquartered in China and its address and other details are –

International Software Plaza Bdg. Zhongguancun Software Park

No. 8 West Dongbeiwang Road. Beijing, 100193 China.

It’s North American address is as follows –

5808 Lake Washington Blvd NE

 #400,Kirkland, WA 98033, USA

 Phone –  +1 425-216-6300

It has two official websites.

It’s North American website is  –   http://isoftstoneinc.com

And the global website is   –   https://issworld.isoftstone.com

At the the time of this writing, iSoftstone was hiring worldwide for various positions such as –

  • Online Ad Evaluator
  • Transcriber
  • Conversational speech
  • Search Engine Evaluator and so on

This is how the application page should look like should you go there –

Look for your country and the positions available.

Here is the link to their job application web-page –

iSoftstone Job Application

Update – 19th Jan – They have re-branded their crowdsourcing platform to TEEMWORK.AI

So don’t be confuse when you see TEEMWORK.AI instead of iSoftstone in their home page.

Pay Rate

The hourly rate for Search Evaluator position is approximately $14/hr for Americans and Europeans.

The rate is of course lower for Asians and Africans.

Payment Method

I worked on a couple of projects with them and was paid through PayPal. The payment method may differ for different locations around the world.

Qualification Process

For the same position as above, the qualification process would be the same.

However, if the search engine evaluation project mentioned in their job posting is from Microsoft, the qualification test would be different.

Normally, the client for most search engine evaluation jobs available out there is GOOGLE.

However, since Microsoft also has the search engine, namely Microsoft Bing, they also do hire search engine evaluators.

iSoftstone’s client most likely is Microsoft. It could well be Google as well. I am not 100% sure about it.

iSoftstone Highlights

Don’t hires as much, but they do hire at least once a year.

4) Raterlabs

Raterlabs was a sister company of Leapforce, created specially to hire Americans as part-time employees.

With the acquisition of Leapforce, Appen has also acquired Raterlabs.

But Raterlabs still functions as a separate entity, hence its logo and urls haven’t been changed unlike that for the old Leapforce site.

If you just have a casual glance, you would see that the website of the current Appen Connect (former Leapforce) and Raterlabs, looks almost the same.

Here is how Raterlabs looks like –

Raterlabs Hourly Rate

Their hourly rate ranges from $11 – $13 depending on which state of USA you are located.

They pay via Payoneer and direct deposit. You can create a Payoneer account here and get $25* bonus, if you do’t have a Payoneer account yet.

The bonus will be paid once you are paid $1000 to your Payoneer account.

Hours per week

Since you are hired as a part-time employees, you are required to give a minimum of 15 hours/week and a maximum of 26 hours/week.

And please note that, only Americans can work here.

Qualification process

Since this position is for search engine evaluator job, the qualification process is the same three step process –

  • Theoretical Part
  • Practical I
  • Practical II

You can read this for more on search engine evaluator exam –

Raterlabs Highlights

Hires Americans as part-time employees.

My Recommendation

I have worked with Appen (which was separate then), iSoftstone and Leapforce for various projects. Currently, I’m an active Search Engine Evaluator (I also worked as social media evaluator before) with Leapforce, now known as Appen.

So I am more than qualified to give you the right recommendation.

I would recommend you to sign up for all the companies, and go with the one that gives the fastest response.

As of June 2019, Appen has a lot of projects and is offering $250 bonus, on top of the normal pay, if you just complete 40 hours with them in the first month.

This bonus has been going on since April 2019, and if you sign up now ( i.e. after April 2019), you are eligible for this bonus.

Please note that the bonus amount is for search engine evaluator position only, and not for other positions.

  1. Hi, I think Appen Global was a great company, but not anymore. Now that is Appen Connect it lost many good things. Projects are not so longer anymore, too many people having one queue to work with so jobs end quickly. The platform is not so friendly and support is terrible. It used to be a great company to work, again, not anymore.

    1. Those us who were with Leapforce since the beginning has a slightly different view Laureen. We feel that after Appen acquired Leapforce and re-branded it as Appen Connect bringing in some many crowdworkers and projects from Appen Global while also reducing the pay rates for new workers, was not a good decision. The transition wasn’t smooth at all, it was chaotic and messy. There are way too many workers and projects now and they have very few people in support.

On the flipside, they brought in lots of project. They need to work in faster processing of applications though. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

  2. Hi Sam,

I already signed a contract with Appen 3 days ago. Until now, no email I received from them. When I will start to work?

Thanks for your favorable and kind response.

    1. For which project was it? Normally you immediately after signing contract, once you’ve passed the test of that particular project.

      1. Hi Sam,

The project is Concho. See below email response after signing a contract:

        Dear Obenjie Obena,

Thank you for completing the required forms. Your documents have been received, and after we review them, we will finalize your registration.

A follow-up email will be sent if we notice any discrepancies in your paperwork.

        Best Regards,
        The Appen team

        1. Its not a contract. It’s just an acknowledgement for registration. And moreover this is just a short survey project. Look for some long term projects like Yukon and all.

          1. Hi Sam,

It was a contract I signed. See below before signing a contract:

            Dear Obenjie Obena,

Congratulations on qualifying for your first project!!

We would like to offer you an Independent Agent contract at this time.

To complete the next step of the qualification process, please login to our website to review and sign the Master Service Agreement here: https://connect.appen.com/qrp/core/login

It is important that you carefully read and understand the document before signing it.

            Qualification Steps:
            ————————-
            * COMPLETED – Complete online qualification information
            * COMPLETED – Basic qualification package to be reviewed by Appen Ltd.
            * COMPLETED – Complete online document signing
            * COMPLETED – Qualify for your first project
            * IN PROGRESS – Final Paperwork
            * Begin work!
            ————————-

Once you have completed the forms per the included instructions, we will then be able to work toward finalizing your contract.

We look forward to receiving your response!

            Best Regards,
            The Appen team

          2. It says “IN PROGRESS – Final Paperwork” I think they are still finalizing your papers.

  3. Just curious. How can I earn $4000 per month with only $3 per hour. I couldn’t match up the numbers.

    Thanks

    1. You can’t! The new Indian raters are paid just $3 per hour. But we the old ones are still paid the old rate (leapforce rate). We are still paid $7/hr. So with that rate I made $2007 as you can read here – https://www.outsidethatcubicle.com/leapforce-income-of-2007-or-1-4-lakh-along-with-payment-proof/

Now that $4000 rate that I mentioned is for Europeans/Americans whose pay rate are higher than ours. Hence the reason why I said – one can make UP TO $4000 per month working as a rater. The keyword being “UP TO”.

I guess it is clear now 🙂

  4. Hey , thanks… The nda for happen project says I can do others like “yukon, some other name and ” so I can also teemwork right ?

  5. How to find wther the client is different?I received invitation from teemwork to participate in exam for ad evaluator role (microsoft)but then I recently got accepted into appen for ad assessor/rater role for Facebook .so now I want to know what do I do at this situation.Teemwork has better pay and working hours but appen doesn’t have ..if I get selected can I leave tat specific project in appen? If so how to do?

    1. One way to know is to check the NDA that you will be signing. Other way is to trust me :). Yes you can leave anytime. But I would keep working in both the companies if I have time because Appen has multiple projects with varying pay scales with some projects paying as high as $21/hr.

      1. Hey , thanks… The nda for happen project says I can do others like “yukon, some other name and ” so I can also do in teemwork right ?

    2. Hi Tiny, Which country do you belong to which was accepted in teemwork application?

  6. Hi Sam,

This is Prakash, from india, I am selected as a search engine evaluator in Lionbridge and i started work recently.

But my problem is it’s little difficult to maintain the quality above 85%. My previous month NM score is 50%. What should i do I tried to watch learning course and still I have done mistakes.

Please suggest me to how to maintain long time my account and quality level.

    Thanks and regards.

    1. Read and re-read the guidelines multiple times. Do not ignore the practice sessions that Ashwini sends you. Watch the tutorials and videos or whatever is available inside your portal. It takes some time and patience and a lot of reading.

  7. Hi, sam if I selected for appen, can I eligible to apply for lionbridge.

    1. Lionbridge doesn’t allow it.

  8. Hi Sam,

I have applied for Lion bridge Internet Assessor and my application was selected. Now they are asking for some documentation to submit,In which they are asking about residence. Actually im from india and im staying in Dubai. I keep traveling to Dubai and India. So is it a problem about residency. Please reply to me.

    1. Could be a problem. Please email their support. They require that you must be living in a particular country for at least 5 consecutive years.

      1. Hi Sam, thanks for reply. Will there be any problem if i apply for appen with my husband email and start working from same laptop which I use for lion bridge.? Please let me know.

        1. There would be a big problem! Especially if the projects are the same. Most of the time it is the same project in both of these companies, it is just the name that is different.
Some people say that you can work in both the companies at the same time with the same system as long as the projects are different – meaning different clients. Like you can work in Personalized Internet Assessor in Lionbridge while your husband can work in a Facebook/Instagram project in Appen. It is possible to do it, although there are some risks to it.

Your safest bet is for your husband to work in iSoftstone. Completely different clients. You can check out iSoftstone here – https://teemwork.ai/CrowdJobListings/tabid/103/language/en-US/Default.aspx

Please note that iSoftstone has been re-branded as TEEMWORK. So don’t be confused by the name.

          Good Luck !

  9. Hey! I am working for Lionbridge from India, for their Internet Search Safety Program (English). I was getting work (1-2hrs/day) when I was restricted; but since the time I have been transitioned to full time work without restriction on hours….I have stopped getting tasks altogether. Have been mailing them about this since past 3 months, they just reply that they will try their best to get tasks loaded into system. But it’s been 3 months since I am completely out of work. Not even 1 task. Have you faced the same? Please help. Do you think if I shift to their other program – like Maps Quality Analyst, I will get work on a regular basis? Please share your experience.

    1. Hi Tanu, I am aware of this situation and from what I’ve learned, they will be transitioning you guys to some other project. And they don’t allow you to work for multiple projects within their platform at the same time. You can check out Appen here – https://connect.appen.com/qrp/public/jobs?uref=6c2ff9f87034def5768bd6b5bb65d9df

As long as the projects and the clients are different, you can work at Lionbridge and Appen at the same time.

      1. Thanks for replying Sam. Do you personally have tasks in other Lionbridge programs? If yes which of the program in Lionbridge does have tasks available? Does their ‘Maps Analyst’ program currently having tasks available for India?

        1. I don’t work with Lionbridge at the moment. I am with Appen only previously known as Leapforce. Been with them since 2016. Right now apart Internet Safety Evaluator project, all other projects has tasks in Lionbridge. Maps Analyst position should have tasks as well.

    2. Initially they allow you to limit hrs, go to simulator complete practice items, then you will get max. Hrs.

  10. Can I work with both Appen and Isoftstone? Will it lead to contract termination with Appen ?

    1. Yes you can.Make sure to check that the projects are different.

    2. Yes you can. Just make sure that the clients are different.

  11. I’ll do as you say.
Thanks a lot for the quick reply.
You are doing a great job on this website, keep it up man.
    Best off luck.

  12. Do i need a graduate degree to apply for it?

    1. Degree is preferred but not exactly required. They do asks for degree though. My advice is just to apply whether you have a degree or not.

      1. First of all Thanks a lot for the quick response.
I checked they are hiring in my city, but they are asking for a college degree.
I’ll take your word and try anyway.
Thank you again. You are doing a great job running this site.
        Keep it up.
        Good luck.

  13. Can i work for Appen or Lionbridge as a Nigerian who lives in Nigeria.

    1. Please check their official websites. Try and apply for it.

  14. Sir, I have applied for lionbridge. So, can my other family member can too apply for it or not?

    1. Only one family member per household can work with them. And Lionbridge doesn’t allow or doesn’t take people who have applied for work with other companies. They are pretty strict about it.
