Search engine evaluator jobs are in the rage at the moment and rightfully so. This post seeks to list, discuss, and analyze the search engine evaluator companies hiring at the moment.

I am an active search engine evaluator with Appen (formerly Leapforce) and hence I have the expertise and authority to discuss it. I have been with them since June 2016, it’s been over 4+ years now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work for both Appen and Lionbridge at the same time?

Technically No. But provided you work on separate projects whose clients are different and these companies don’t find out, you can work for both companies at the same time. I personally don’t recommend it though.

Can I work for multiple projects in Appen?

Yes, as long as you maintain the minimum required quality scores and meet the hourly commitments, you can work on multiple projects in Appen.

What is the salary of search engine evaluators?

Search Engine Evaluators don’t have a fixed salary. They are paid per hour and their hourly varies from country to country. It also depends on the company they work for. Read this for more info.

Below are the list and complete overview of the only 4 companies that hire Search Engine Evaluators also known as web search evaluators.

1) Appen Connect/ Leapforce

Appen is a publicly-traded Australian company based in Chatswood, Australia.

The parent company Appen acquired Leapforce in late 2017 and we got an email about the acquisition from the CEO of Leapforce, Darren Jackson.

Leapforce continued as Leapforce until early 2019. It is rebranded as Appen Connect now.

The good thing about it is that they have brought in a lot of work from Appen and moved it to Leapforce. They have also moved their agents from Appen to Leapforce.

So, the present Appen Connect, formerly Leapforce hires for projects such as –

  • Search Engine Evaluation/Internet Analyst
  • Social Media Evaluation
  • Translation
  • Projects from Microsoft
  • Surveys
  • E-commerce testing
  • Transcription/Translation

Of all the projects, the only project that you wanna be on is Search Engine Evaluation Project as it is a long-term project and you can work for as many years as you want as long as you maintain the requisite quality.

Appen Search Engine Evaluator Salary/Hourly pay

They pay more than the minimum wage. They definitely pay more than Mcdonalds. Here is the hourly rate breakdown for you –

US & Americas    –  $13.5

UK & some Europeans   – $14/hr

Asians  –   $7

Indians – $3.

Some projects pays as high as $21/hr

Appen Payment method

Leapforce used to pay us via western union before. But after rebranding it to Appen, they changed the payment method.

Their preferred method of payment is Payoneer now.

I personally like Payoneer as they are superfast, has okay transaction charges, and okay currency exchange rates.

They pay us within the NET 15 days term. Meaning, we get paid by the 15th of next month, for the work that we do this month. Most of the time, we get paid by the 12th.

So before signing up to work for Appen, create an account with Payoneer HERE and get a $25* bonus as soon as you are paid $1000 to your Payoneer account.

Where to sign up for Appen

You can sign up right below with your active gmail –

Appen Sign Up

If you sign up NOW (i.e. after April 2019), you are eligible for an extra $250 bonus.

The bonus will be paid if –

  • You are selected for the SEARCH ENGINE EVALUATOR job
  • You work for a minimum of 20 hours in your first two weeks, you get $100.
  • Another 20 hours in the next 2 weeks will bring you another $150

On the next page, you will need to select your primary language, dialect and on the page after that, you will fill in all your details and also upload your CV.

Qualification Process

Depending on the type of project, there will be different types of the qualification process.

For a search engine evaluator job, the qualification test consists of three parts –

  • Theoretical Part
  • Practical I ( Has to be taken in desktop/laptop/Chromebook
  • Practical II (Has to be taken in a desktop/laptop/Chromebook and a mobile device
  • In order to go to the next part, one needs to pass the preceding exam. And exams are tough, not everyone gets through them. Here is an in-depth guide on the Leapforce exam –

  SEARCH ENGINE EVALUATOR EXAM

Thoughts –  I have been working with Appen (formerly Leapforce) since June 2016 and my experience with them so far, has been splendid. Their support is great, response time is low. We feel as if we are valued there. There have been no problems when it comes to payment and invoicing, which is fantastic.

The only downside is that they have reduced the payment for new evaluators. We are still paid the same rate though.

The upside being that they have brought in more projects.

Note – Appen Connect doesn’t hire a search engine evaluator from America. For that, the former company Leapforce created a new sister company called Raterlabs.

More on that later on. Read on.

Appen Highlights

One can work on multiple projects at the same time, they also got an awesome referral bonus.

2) Lionbridge

This is another well-known company that specializes in providing translation and localization services. They also hire Search Engine Evaluators and Social Media Evaluators but they call them by different names.

They call Search Engine Evaluators as Web Content Assessor, Personalized Internet Assessor, Internet Analyst, Raters and they called Social Media Evaluator as Social Media Assessor. The terminology of course doesn’t matter. The work is the same in each company that would be discussed here.

Lionbridge is based in Ballina, Ireland, and has a corporate office in Waltham, Massachusetts, USA. It employs independent contractors all year-round. At the time of this writing, there were job opportunities for the USA, France, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Japan.

You may want to check out the latest job postings here –

Lionbridge Job Opportunities

This is how the Lionbridge sign up page should look like. Select the continent your country is in, then scroll down to select your country and the jobs available.

Lionbridge Pay Rate

Lionbridge pays around $13 – $14 per hour.

For Asians and Africans, the pay rate is of course less. A friend of mine (Indian) works in Lionbridge and he is paid $6.81/hr for English language rating.

And I came to know from trusted sources that for Hindi language rating, they pay almost $8/hr.

Lionbridge Payment method

They pay through direct deposit for their American contractors but I don’t know how they pay to Asians or Europeans. But one shouldn’t really worry about payment when one is working for reputed companies like Lionbridge or Leapforce. Because they will always pay you on time, no matter what.

For Indians, they pay through Direct Deposit, unlike Leapforce which pays through Payoneer.

Lionbridge Qualification Exam

The qualification exam for the same projects for Lionbridge and Leapforce is the same. It is because they have the same client, namely Google.

Read this in-depth guide on search engine evaluation exam HERE

Important Side Note

Since their client is the same, one cannot work for both Appen and Lionbridge at the same time.

Thoughts

Lionbridge is a legit company and is as well-known as Leapforce. The only problem with them is that they don’t respond as quickly as Leapforce when it comes to queries from potential applicants. And they don’t hire as much as Leapforce does. But they are not as strict as Leapforce when it comes to quality checks. Also, their hour ( for Indians) is limited to 20 hours per week, they do get bonus hours sometimes though.

Lionbridge Highlights

Got multiple positions, but one can only work at one position at a time.

3) iSoftstone

This is a Fortune 100 company with over 18,000 in-house employees and it specializes in various fields of operations such as data analytics, mobility, digital experience, financial services and banking, QA & testing, crowd-sourcing, etc.

It’s headquartered in China and its address and other details are –

International Software Plaza Bdg. Zhongguancun Software Park

No. 8 West Dongbeiwang Road. Beijing, 100193 China.

It’s North American address is as follows –

5808 Lake Washington Blvd NE

 #400,Kirkland, WA 98033, USA

 Phone –  +1 425-216-6300

It has two official websites.

It’s North American website is  –   http://isoftstoneinc.com

And the global website is   –   https://issworld.isoftstone.com

At the the time of this writing, iSoftstone was hiring worldwide for various positions such as –

  • Online Ad Evaluator
  • Transcriber
  • Conversational speech
  • Search Engine Evaluator and so on

This is how the application page should look like should you go there –

Look for your country and the positions available.

Here is the link to their job application web-page –

iSoftstone Job Application

They have re-branded their crowdsourcing platform to TEEMWORK.AI

So don’t be confuse when you see TEEMWORK.AI instead of iSoftstone in their home page.

Pay Rate

The hourly rate for the Search Evaluator position is approximately $14/hr for Americans and Europeans.

The rate is of course lower for Asians and Africans.

Payment Method

I worked on a couple of projects with them and was paid through PayPal. The payment method may differ for different locations around the world.

Qualification Process

For the same position as above, the qualification process would be the same.

However, if the search engine evaluation project mentioned in their job posting is from Microsoft, the qualification test would be different.

Normally, the client for most search engine evaluation jobs available out there is GOOGLE.

However, since Microsoft also has a search engine, namely Microsoft Bing, they also hire search engine evaluators.

iSoftstone’s client is Microsoft.

iSoftstone Highlights

Don’t hires as much, but they do hire at least once a year. They do hire for UHRS jobs as well.

4) Raterlabs

Raterlabs was a sister company of Leapforce, created especially to hire Americans as part-time employees.

With the acquisition of Leapforce, Appen has also acquired Raterlabs.

But Raterlabs still functions as a separate entity, hence its logo and URLs haven’t been changed unlike that for the old Leapforce site.

If you just have a casual glance, you would see that the website of the current Appen Connect (former Leapforce) and Raterlabs, looks almost the same.

Here is how Raterlabs looks like –

Raterlabs Hourly Rate

Their hourly rate ranges from $11 – $13 depending on which state of the USA you are located in.

They pay via Payoneer and direct deposit. You can create a Payoneer account here and get a $25* bonus if you don’t have a Payoneer account yet.

The bonus will be paid once you are paid $1000 to your Payoneer account.

Hours per week

Since you are hired as a part-time employee, you are required to give a minimum of 15 hours/week and a maximum of 26 hours/week.

And please note that, only Americans can work here.

Qualification process

Since this position is for search engine evaluator job, the qualification process is the same three-step process –

  • Theoretical Part
  • Practical I
  • Practical II

You can read this for more on search engine evaluator exam –

Raterlabs Highlights

Hires Americans as part-time employees.

My Recommendation

I have worked with Appen (which was separate then), SoftStone, and Leapforce for various projects. Currently, I’m an active Search Engine Evaluator (I also worked as social media evaluator before) with Leapforce, now known as Appen.

So I am more than qualified to give you the right recommendation.

I would recommend you to sign up for all the companies and go with the one that gives the fastest response.

As of Jan 2020, Appen is hiring for multiple projects.

Sir, recently I got selected in appen. I applied for Nile, Nyasa and Noyo project but even after more than 1 week it is still in progress. Can u tell me when they will give me to work on project?

    1. Sam Narzary

It entirely depends on the client and Appen. They may get back to you within a week or few months. I can’t really say for sure unfortunately.

  2. Preet

    1) Do I apply separately for Hindi language rating job @$8/hr? Or even if I start with $6.81/hr as English rater, I can later take Hindi rater job?
    2) How did your trusted source land up $8/hr Hindi language rating job; can you tell a little more about it?
BTW, you are doing awesome work!

    1. Sam Narzary

Hindi rating jobs are shown separately in their website. If you got Lionbridge job application page, you would see Personalized Internet Assesor position for Hindi clearly mentioned, and that is of their client got any requirement.

You can only work at one position and can’t move from English to Hindi later on.

He applied to Hindi position when it was advertised in their application page here – http://www.thesmartcrowd.com/about/workers/job-opportunities/

  3. Vikram

Can I work for appen and isoftstone for both simultaneously?

    1. Sam Narzary

iSoftstone don’t hire Indians. You can work in Appen and Lionbridge at the same time, provided the projects are from different clients and Lionbridge doesn’t know about it.

  4. Tanu

How is Appen Connect and Appen Global different? Seem to be 2 different websites/portals..

    1. Sam Narzary

Appen Global is the original Appen company that acquired Leapforce. Leapforce has since been rebranded to Appen Connect. Almost all the projects have been moved to it from Appen Global. Yes they got different urls.

  5. Tanu

What about paying taxes in India?
What is the income limit to pay tax/GST, while working with Appen or Lionbridge? Or does everyone and anyone working here has to pay GST, irrespective of what income you earn?
What percentage of GST do you pay, if any?

    1. Sam Narzary

We are responsible for paying our own taxes. For yearly incomes up to 2.5 lakh, we pay 0 tax. For 2.5L to 5L we pay 5% and so on. Depends on total yearly income. It is best answered by CA 🙂

  6. TUNCER

    Dear Sam,
My country isn’t on the list of “Job Opportunities” of Lionbridge. How can I apply then?
    Thanks

    1. Sam Narzary

Then unfortunately you can’t. You can look out for other companies mentioned.

  7. Jonathan

    Hi Sam.
Thank you for the helpful information.

I just passed the Lionbridge exam, so the next step is applying for iSoft.
I heard not only iSoft but Apen is also okay. Do you think this is true?

    1. Sam Narzary

      Congratulations !

I am so happy this blog post helped you. Comments like this makes my day. Thank you ! 🙂

Appen and Leapforce are same now, meaning Appen has acquired Leapforce. And iSoftstone is also good depending from where you apply and work for. But make sure of one thing. Don’t work in the same project for different companies. And Lionbridge don’t allow its contractors to work with other companies. But as long as the projects are different and Lionbridge doesn’t know about it, you can work with other companies as well. But apply discretion. Don’t allow Lionbridge to know about it and don’t work in the projects that are similar.

  8. M Irfan

Really interesting and helpful article. I am undergoing application process in Lionbridge. I failed the 3rd part of exam but they are giving me chance to retake the exams as you have mentioned in one of the answer. I want to know how best i can prepare and clear the exams successfully. Thanks for your inputs.

  9. Bhanu

Hi, Sam, thanks for the very clear explanation, although I need a small clarification. I’m working for Lionbridge now want to diversify for security and you mentioned that Lionbridge is very strict. Are you sure that can I take a chance to apply for isoftstone and work? Should I tell Lionbridge about my selection after I got selected? Please guide me.

    1. Sam Narzary

Hey..I don’t think that you should take a risk buddy. But again it’s your decision.
If you want to go ahead with iSoftstone, go ahead, apply for it. But I don’t think that you should tell Lionbridge about it after getting in there.
      Again, it is YOUR DECISION.

One question for you, is there any referral policy and bonuses in Lionbridge?

      1. raj

Thanks for your answer Sam. No Sam, as I know there is no referral such thing in Lionbridge.

        1. Sam Narzary

          Okay. Glad to know.

  10. Abhijith

Hey sam i read your blog and i like people like you who just just drives their own life with their own idea and work, i have known this evaluator thing for some time now(actually inquiring about evaluator landed me on quora–>to this page) , now could you help me clear some doubts, you stated that one cannot work for multiple companies that have same clients(google) but its okay to include isoftstone(microsoft) as its client is different. looking at this i would like to know if there’s any harm if one can “apply” for leapforce, lionbridge, appen and isoftstone at same time and if get selected then may be they can work for only one company. i just want to make sure if their is any restriction in sending resumes(applying) to these companies,..also is it compulsory to have people in g+(i dont use g+ but uses other google services)… hope u see this and reply

    1. Sam Narzary

Yes you can apply to all of the companies at the same time. But if Lionbridge knows that you have applied for other companies too, they will reject your application.

      1. Abhijith

thanks bro thanks for the reply, but u didn’t answer about the Google + situation–is it necessary to have enough people in our people list

        1. Sam Narzary

It is not mandatory but would be good if you have enough people in your list.

          1. Abhijith

okay..anyway thanks again, i have applied at LF today and will update if i get in. Thanks for your blog which inspired me and it was always good to know you..hope you keep up your good work(blog) and cheers to your future work.

  11. Sean

Do you know if I can work with Appen and LB in the same time for the same ‘Online Content Evaluator (Appen)’ & ‘ Internet Assessor (LB)’ position? I already took the job of Internet Assessor at LB and try to apply for Appen. I wonder will it cause the interest conflict and influence my current job with Lionbridge.

Do I need to apply it with different email address? Should I notice them

    appreciate for your assistance.

    Sean

    1. Sam Narzary

      Just one word “Don’t”

You may be blacklisted. And moreover even if you apply through different gmail, what about the IP address? It still stays the same.

It is a massive CONFLICT OF INTEREST. And I know that Lionbridge is very strict.

  12. ApLu Sadat

Hello Sam, 1st of all Thanks for Your helpful article..

This is ApLu Sadat from Dhaka, Bangladesh.

I have tried for LionBridge, but failed to qualify for the position. As much I know that I cant apply again with same Ip, So therefor may I know is there any other way to apply again with LionBridge?

Most of the company don’t hire search engine evaluator from Bangladesh (accept LionBridge). OK now the main thing I wanna know that, can you suggest me any websites who hire for this kinds of job from my country Bangladesh.

Plz suggest me something where i can do job from home..

Plz help me to grow up in this Online World…

    Thanks Once again..

    1. Sam Narzary

Yo should be able to take a one time retake. Just email them. Don’t re-apply but ask for a retake. I am pretty sure that they allow a one time retake of the exam.

  13. Santanu

    Dear Sam,

I am currently in qualification process with lionbridge. They have clearly mentioned that to work with them one must not work all the above mentioned companies including iSoftstone as well… for conflict of interest . This is for FYIP

    1. Sam Narzary

      Thanks for the info.

But once you get through any of these four companies, you can then apply for iSoftstone, they don’t give a shit. :).

  14. Chaithanya

    I have a question.
Does Appen and Lionbridge restrict evaluator to work for limited time in a month?

    1. Sam Narzary

I haven’t work with Appen or Lionbridge as a Search Engine Evaluator or Social Media Evaluator because once you work with Leapforce you can’t work for similar projects (with same clients) in different companies. I have worked with Appen for other projects not related to Search Engine Evaluation.

But they shouldn’t have any restrictions on how much you can work as long as you perform quality work. Same is the case with Leapforce. You can work for 200+ hours with Leapforce as long as you maintain high quality work.

But I do know of the fact that for Social Media Evaluation job, the work time is limited. But for Search Engine Evaluation, it shouldn’t be the case, even with Appen or Lionbridge. I am not 100% sure though.

      1. Kishan

I sent my application to Leapforce almost 3 months ago but still there’s no reply from them why?
Another question is that why there is a bold note in starting of page when we select our country as India with either English or Hindi language, ” This position is restricted to current residents of India.” I don’t know WHY? I’m giving my email so you can give me proper guidance.

        Thank you

        1. Sam Narzary

          Hey Kishan,

They may take anywhere from 1 -6 months to process your application.

“This position is restricted to current residents of India” means that only Indians who have lived in India continuously for 5 or more years can work in these positions.

  15. Daniel

    Great work. thanks alot

    1. Sam Narzary

You’re welcome. Did you find any company that hires from Ghana or not?
